Your friend would put his child in Singapore knowing that child will face hardships, just like how the father did (I'm assuming your friend is a male). He didn't do it with no good reasons, he did it with good intentions: a hope that his son will be resilient.

You gave your student a comment saying their problem is/will be a good thing as you also faced it in the past. You said it with good intentions. You know it will get better in the future thanks to your experiences.

Both situations have good intentions with a realistic view and a vision for a better future.

It makes me think about Hoc Sinh Truong Chuyen. A lot of students didn't make it trying to get in. A lot of students made it and are grateful towards their parents for the rest of their life.

Point is, it was with good intentions. But same words or same actions could land differently on different people.

That's something you can't control.

You may think saying that sentence about 'problem' is dismissing your student's struggle. But you're not.
